Cappadocia Trekking

Trekking in Cappadocia. Three millions years ago Violent eruptions of Mount Erciyes (3916m) and Mount Hasan (3300m) covered the surrounding plateau of Cappadocia with tuff, a soft stone comprised of lava, ash and mud. The wind and rain have eroded this brittle rock and created a surrealist landscape of rock cones, capped pinnacles and fretted ravines, in colours that range from warm reds and golds to cool greens and greys. Goreme is one of those rare regions in the world where the works of man blend into the natural surrounding.

Leaving the capital city behind, we head southeast towards Cappadocia. We pass the massive ‘ Tuz Golu’- one of the salt lakes in Turkey and also
stop at the 13th century Agzikarahan caravanserai. It is constructed to develop the trade about at every 40km. The gate is a fine example of Seljuk
architecture and is a reminder that we are travelling one of the ancient caravan routes linking Asia to Europe. Arriving to Selime village where we
begin our first walk, at the northern end of the Ihlara valley and overnight in the valley itself. Trekking in Cappadocia. Overnight pension with breakfast.

Day 3 : Belisırma – Goreme
The narrow, steep-sided Ihlara valley, dotted with rock cut churches, was once the favourite retreat of Byzantine monks. This valley was formed by
primeval earthquakes and the was once rushing river is now a quiet stream. As we walk along the winding valley, with cliffs reaching up to
170m in some places , we see small garden cultures that originally would have provided for the colonies and made them self supporting. There
are many rock-cut churches is this valley with valley with well-preserved frescos dating from the 9th century. In the afternoon we drive to
Goreme via the Underground City at Derinkuyu. 8 subterranean levels stretch 57 meters below ground. After visit continue to Goreme a town
particularly renamed for its pottery and much of it is still moulded. Overnight at pension.

Day 4 : Akvadi – Pigeon valley
We trek through the Akvadi (white valley) eroded so perfectly by time, rain and wind during centuries. On our way following a seasonal river, many
strange curious rock formations and fairy chimneys round us. If we are lucky we can also see some wild birds.(like hoopoe) and some wild animals
(like fox). In 3h walk our way gets us up to Uchisar village where we have lunch break in a restaurant. Uchisar village is settled around a high
promoter, which is called citadel. We visit it walking to the top where we have rewarding panoramic view on all the surrealist Cappadoccia area.
Cappadocia , Then optional walk up to Bozdağ mountain 350 m up to Zelve hill a great panoramic view is available on this surrealist area and
walk to Dervent valley about 4 hours.. After Lunch break we will visit Goreme Open air Museum , a monastic complex of rock churches and chapels
covered with frescoes, is one of the best-known site in the region. Most of the chapels date from the 10th to 13th centuries and many of them are
built on an inscribed cross-plan with a central cupola supported by four columns.. Afternoon we will have opportunity to visit Avanos Famous

Day 6 : Cycle Tour – Walking on Kızılcukur Valley
In the morning we will see our bikes and we will ride to our bikes around Goreme town. Our route follows an old farm track between the apricot
orchards and vineyards and past the now familiar fairy chimneys. Viticulture has been here since the Hittites, but it was the exiled Christians
who really developed the vineyards and, for a while, wine was exported under the label of mineral water! Things have changed little and today
most wine is still bottled for export. .. . Kızılcukur valley. Sometimes known as the ‘’red hole’’ Kızılcukur is probably the hottest valley in region.
Hidden in its array of fairy chimneys is The church with grapes where there are frescos depicting viniculture and fruit growing.(The vine
produced here now is very sweet and heavy ) Visiting Cavuşin which lies on top of a collapsed section of early Christian cave city.
This was caused by a huge rockslide, which
together wit earthquakes and natural erosion has caused a split in the plateau. The atrium of the church at cavuşın hac cascaded down,
exposing some of the frescoes. The richness and variety of these frescoes has caused to be reportedly among the best works of early Christian
icon painting. Overnight hotel.

Day 7 : Cappadocia – Ankara
Our final day in this region will be spent by walking in Paşabagları, known as the valley of the Priests. Many of the chimneys here are only
partially divided, showing us the continuous erosion process. This valley is also noted for the many caves in the fairy used by hermits for
their retreats . The afternoon is pent driving back to Ankara. Overnight hotel.

The Teke Peninsula, which stretches into the Mediterranean Sea between the gulfs of Antalya and Fethiye, was known as Lycia in ancient times. The Mediterranean Sea marked the southern boundary of this region, while its eastern, western, and northern borders evolved over the years. Ancient authors noted that the Bey Mountains, the Akdağ range, and their northwest extension, beginning just west of Antalya and moving southwest, formed the northern limit of Lycia. In his renowned epic, the Iliad, Homer recounts how the Lycians fought alongside the Trojans against the Achaeans, led by Glaukos and Sarpedon.

Following Alexander the Great’s death, the Lycians entered a new era. From 309 BC onward, the Ptolemies, who governed Egypt, ruled for nearly a century, a time when the Lycian language faded and was supplanted by Greek.

Between 197 and 167 BC, the region fell under the control of Antiochus III of Syria. Lycia achieved its independence from Rome in 167 BC. Inscriptions and coins from this era reveal that 23 cities united to form the “Lycian Union,” with Xanthos serving as its capital, and coins were minted in the name of this union.

DAY 1 FETHIYE

Fethiye, renowned for its cultural richness, natural attractions, and geographical features, stands out as one of the significant tourist destinations in Türkiye. It is well-known for its artistic creations attributed to the Persians, Lycians, Carians, and Romans. This delightful county is situated in a bay within the Fethiye Gulf, where numerous large and small islands are dispersed. The back of the bay is enveloped by pine forests.

DAY 2 KAYAKÖY (Ghost town) Ovacik – Faralya village walk

Our first stop will be Kayaköy. The story of Kayaköy, located 8 kilometers south of Fethiye and known as Karmylassos in ancient times, goes back to the 3rd millennium BC. However, according to linguistic evidence, the remaining buildings of this city have not yet been excavated from the 4th century BC. During that time, the city was called Levissi, and the building complexes we see on the hillside were constructed by the Greeks. The city, which was deserted due to the rights given to minorities in the later years of the Ottoman Empire, has turned into a ghost town, with nature causing the wooden doors, windows, and roofs to deteriorate. When it was inhabited, the abandoned city had between 350 and 400 houses, each no larger than 50 m2, designed to provide clear views and light. These buildings are mostly two stories tall, with the lower levels serving as cellars, and they include underground cisterns for collecting rainwater from the roofs at their entrances. In addition to the homes, there are many chapels, two large churches, one school, and one customs building scattered throughout the area. After visiting Kayaköy, we will drive to Ovacık. Today, we will walk about 14 km. We’ll drive to the official starting point of the Lycian Way where we will begin our 14 km hike. We’ll head south up onto the slopes of Baba Dagi. After a short walk on the trail, we will have the opportunity to see Turkey’s most famous lagoon, Ölüdeniz Lagoon, as well as the beach. As we pass through pine forests and small villages, after climbing 750 meters, we will descend to Faralya, which is situated on a small plateau above the Butterfly Valley. (14 km/5 hrs-800 m ascent/800 m descent).

Trekking on Ararat Mountains

Trekking on Ararat Mountains. First , we visit Istanbul is the only city in the world which embraces two continents, one arm reaching out into Asia, the other into Europe. The museum, churches, places, mosques and bazaars and the sight of natural beauty seem inexhaustible. As you recline on the shores of the Bosphorus at sunset contemplating the red evening light reflected in the windows and on the slender minarets on the opposite shore you understand, suddenly and profoundly, why so many centuries ago settlers chose to build on this remarkable site. Then 6 days will be on Mt.Ararat Eastern part of Turkey near Iran border and it is a magnificent sprawling dome whose snow covered summit is 5.165m above sea level. Most Christians believe it is the site where Noah’s Ark came to rest after the great Flood. A climb of Mt.Ararat is a tough walk (non-Technical) but requiring a good deal of stamina. Trekking on Ararat Mountains. The upper third of volcanic covered in snow and the last hundred meters to the summit is icy.

First we discover the uniqueness of Cappadocia. In the summertime it’s real joy to walk through this amazing and limestone area. There are wild flowers everywhere; isolated gardens that abound with fruits and vegetables. We follow old paths to visit the rock-cut churches, monasteries and cave dwellings, all of which are set against a textured moonscape of bizarre volcanic erosions. Then we’re ready to tackle a week’s moderate to strenuous trekking through mighty Taurus range passing glistening mountain lakes.

Day 1 : Kayseri Airport – Transfer to Cappadocia

Meet the group at Kayseri airport and drive to Capapdocia to our hotel.

Day 2 : Akvadi – Guvercinlik

We trek thorough the Akvadi (white valley) eroded so perfectly by time, rain and wind during centuries. On our way following a seasonal river, many strange curious rock formations and fairy chimneys round us. If we are lucky we can also see some wild birds (like hoopoe) and some wild animals (like fox). In 3 hrs walk our way gets us up to Uchisar village where we have lunch break in a restaurant. Uchisar village is settled around a high promoter, which is called citadel. We visit it walking to the top where we have rewarding panoramic view on all the surrealist Cappadoccia area. In the afternoon we follow a path to the Guvercinlik (pigeon valley). The piginaries are really very holy for Moslem people because of the Koran (holy book of Islam) and prophet Mohammed. Local people of the region use pigeon’s fertiliser for their vine fields. The path will take us to Goreme town. Overnight Hotel. (5 hrs walk)

Day 3 : Zemi Valley – Gomeda Valley – Mustafpasa

Today we start our hike with Zemi valley. The path leads us through orchards and mesmerizing tunnels. We meet our bus at panaromic view point and drive to Ayvali. In the afternoon we have a short walk from Ayvali to Mustafapasa village where we stop for tea break in a local cafe. We have a short transfer to Mustafapasa, an old greek village which was deserted in 1924 during population exchange between Turkey and Greece. Richly decorated mansions, Ottoman madrasah and 18.century Greek Orthodox church are worthseeing spots in the village. We stroll around the village before we head back to the hotel. Overnight at hotel. (5-6 hrs walk)

Day 4 : Pancarlik Valley – Kizilcukur Valley (Red valley)

In the morning transfer to beginning of Pancarlik valley. It is a fantastic landscape, a tumble of waves with pastels colours, patchwork of vineyards and small gardens in terraces. We can see Sarica and Kepez churches, carved in the heart a fairy chimneys. They are interesting for their architecture. After lunch we will walk Kizilcukur valley (Red valley) which is know also sunset point. The Red Valley is an isolated valley behind Urgup town. It has beautiful rock formations with some great hidden rock – carved churches. The most interesting part of this area is the countless tracks connecting the small villages and towns through vineyards and gardens like a spider net. It is always possible to see villagers working in the area. We can visit some small churches during our walk, our walk will end in Cavusin village. Overnight hotel. (3-4 hrs walk)

Day 5 : Pasabaglari (Monk’s valley) – Bozdag

In the morning we will walk in Pasabaglari formerley known Monk’s valley. Many fairy chimneys with multiple stems and caps. The hermits of Cappadocia distanced themselves from the world by cutting into fairy chimneys rather than living on top of columns. They hollowed out the chimneys from bottom to top creating rooms 10 – 15m high. They lay on beds made from rock. During our walk in this valley we will see many fairy chimneys. After Pasabaglari we will walk up Bozdag the hihest point in Cappadocia that is offering the surrealistic view of Cappadocia. Overnight at hotel. (5 hrs walk)

Day 6 : Ihlara Valley – Visit Underground city

Morning drive to underground city (30 min). Kaymakli Underground city is built by early Christians to protect them from religious persecution. Kaymakli Underground city is an elaborate labyrinth of tunnels and caves and is probably the widest of the underground cities. The most impressive aspect of the Kaymakli Underground city is the organised, structured and comprehensive nature of the complex. It had everything from living space, stables and communal kitchens to a church and a graveyard as well as being well fortified to protect its inhabitants. It is unclear when the city was actually constructed, but the earliest Christians were living in the area from the 4th century. Incredibly well-preserved and maintained, this is a fascinating site to visit. After visit drive to Selime village and start to walk through Melendiz River till Belisirma village where we will have our lunch here. After lunch walking in the Ihlara Valley which is the deepest and the longest canyon in Cappadocia. The beautiful scenery as well as look at the ruins of over 60 Byzantine churches, chapels and monasteries dating back to the 11th – 13th centuries make this valley another popular destination for hikers. After walk return to Cappadocia to our hotel. (4-5 hrs walk)

Day 7 : Zindanonu walk – Goreme Open Air Museum
We will walk through Zindanonu valley, will pass from Goreme town and walk up to scenery place of Goreme and watching the fantastic view of Goreme town. Continue the walk passing through Goreme open air Museum. The Göreme Valley holds the region’s best collection of painted cave-churches. Medieval orthodox Christian monks (1000-1200 AD) carved the caves from the soft volcanic stone and decorated them with elaborate Byzantine frescoes. The valley, and other troglodyte (cave-dweller) habitations in Cappadocia, may have been inhabited since Hittite times, but Göreme is known for its thousand-year-old churches. Late afternoon is free. Overnight at hotel. (2 hrs walk)

Day 8 : Kayseri – Home

After breakfast transfer to the airport, end of the service.

First we discover the uniqueness of Cappadocia. Violent eruptions of Mt Erciyes (3916 m) and Mt Hasan (3300 m) three millions years ago covered the surrounding plateau of Cappadocia with tuff. The wind and rain have eroded this brittle rock and created a surrealist landscape of rock cones, capped pinnacles and fretted ravines, in colours that range from warm reds and golds to cool greens and greys. After we explore Capadocia region we drive to Taurus Mountains. There is always the horizons, studded with peaks of grey, tan and purple; and a magnificent scenery at your feet – the beautiful mountain lakes of Taurus. The high meadows or pastures are inhabited by semi-nomadic groups during the summer, in the months of June to September, in particular, by theyoruk, who are Turkoman in origin and whose traditional occupation is grazing their goats and sheep. On our trek, we will often meet with the hospitality of nomads and local villagers of this area. After trekking part, driving to the coast of Turkey. We sail in the most beautiful coastal area of the Turkish Mediterranean, known to the ancients as Lycia this fabled coast of clear turquoise blue water is rich with archaeological sites. Fragrant pine forests tumble down a back cloth of mountain slopes to end abruptly in red cliffs, secret coves and sandy beaches with its excellent climate, guaranteed sunshine, this delightful coastal offers to spend holidays sailing in a culture, history and nature combining area.

The people of this region lead a nomadic life, travelling with their cows and sheep between the lower valleys and high pastures, where they live for three or four mounts each year, pursuing a way of life that has remained incitement. This trek will be enjoyed by all those who genuinely like exploring previously almost unvisited areas. Than a 5 days will be on Mt. Ararat Eastern part of Turkey Near Iran border and it is a magnificent sprawling dome whose snow covered summit is 5.165m above sea level. Most Christians believe it is the site where Noah’s Ark came to rest after the great Flood. A climb of Mt. Ararat is a tough walk (non-Technical) but requiring a good deal of stamina. The upper third of volcanoes covered in snow and the last hundred meters to the summit is icy (the actual climb to the summit from camp II at 4.100m is optional). Visit van lake and Akdamar island with holly churches is also highlights of trips. Istanbul is last stop to visit.

Few days are spent hiking or warming-up in the fantastically eroded valleys of Cappadocia, million years ago nature began to form the area and that is still going on. From that time, the canyons, plateaux, valleys and most of all the Fairy chimneys became the symbol of Cappadocia. During our walk we follow old paths to visit the rock-cut churches, monasteries and cave dwellings, all of which are set against a textured moonscape of bizarre volcanic erosions. After that we’ll embark on a challenging and adventurous 3-days trek through the Taurus Mountains towards the rich and fertile plains of southern Turkey. The high meadows or pastures are inhabited by semi-nomadic groups during the summer, in the months of June to September – in particular, by the yoruk, who are Turkoman in origin and whose traditional occupation is grazing their goats and sheep. After Taurus part , we drive to beautiful coastal area of the Turkish Mediterranean, known as Lycia. Fragrant pine forests tumble down a back cloth of mountain slopes to end abruptly in red cliffs, secret coves and sandy beaches. With its excellent climate, guaranteed sunshine, this delightful coastal offers to spend holidays sailing in a culture, history and nature combining area.

This is an embarkation on a challenging and adventurous 7 days trek through the Taurus Mountains towards the rich and fertile plains of Southern Turkey. The formation of Taurus range is continued as rocky promontories and Islands. An intricate topography of lofty gorges and compact valleys make this part of the Taurus (known as Aladaglar) a very attractive challenge to trekkers like us. Nomadic groups inhabit the high meadows or pastures during the summer months of June to September – in particular, the yoruk are Turkoman in origin and whose traditional occupation is grazing their goats and sheep. On our trek, we will often meet with the hospitality of nomads and local villagers of this area.
